This work is about the exploration of the definition of self. Often times we do not see the self that others see. We all have different life experiences and when we meet other people we do not know the history of that other person. We usually go by what we see and what we see is not always the truth or the whole story. Most of us have been “damaged” in some way or another. These imperfections usually make us unique and help to create a sense of self. When you think of self in these terms you can start to see that there is an interdependence on experience. In trying to define self I had to use many materials that come from very destructive sources. In this work I wanted to show the connection of damaging ourselves through the damage we cause to our world. I also wanted to engage the viewer in a dialog, either internal or external. Can self be defined? Can you show only the best parts without the damage and should you? More importantly, how much damage are you causing just to define your self?
